How to make a gift to your community foundation:

  1. Donate cash

    • This is the simplest and quickest way to contribute.

    • You can just hit the Donate button to make a gift using a credit card.

    • If you would rather write a cheque, you can mail it to PO Box 701, Creston. V0B 1G0.

    • Would you prefer to meet with us in person to pass on your gift? Not a problem. Email us at contact@crestonvalleycf.ca and we’d be happy to meet at your convenience.

  2. Donate existing insurance policies that you don’t need any longer

    • Do you have a policy initially intended to provide financial protection for your family that you no longer need? While it’s of little value to you, it can be an easy way to make a difference to your community.

    • There are options to either transfer ownership of the policy to the Foundation or make the Foundation the policy’s beneficiary. Each choice has a different impact on the income taxes that will be owing by either you or your estate. We can help determine the optimal way to proceed to meet your needs.

    • If you have a term policy that is about to expire and you don’t think you’ll be renewing – give us a call before it lapses. These policies may be of significant value to your community.

  3. Donate appreciated securities

    • This method of making a gift and maximizing tax benefits is growing in popularity.

    • If you have a security (stock, bond, etc.) and it has grown in value, you are entitled to receive a tax receipt for the market value of the holding when it has been transferred to a charity as a donation in kind.

    • 100 percent of the market value of the holding goes to the Foundation (the charity wins) and your taxable income is reduced by an amount that is based on the same 100 percent, with no capital gains tax owing (the donor wins). It’s no wonder this is becoming a popular way to transfer wealth!

    • Transfers are simple and can be arranged between your brokerage and the Foundation’s.

    • Please speak to us directly if you have questions regarding this type of gift.

  4. Plan to make a gift at the end of your life

    • Do you want to “give something back” to your community but are not in a position to do so right away? Leaving a gift for the Foundation when you pass on is a wonderful way to permanently support causes that are important to you.

    • Most people making an end of life gift do so in their will. However, it can also be as simple as changing the beneficiary of your RRSP, RRIF, or LIRA.

    • End of life gifts, just like those made during your life, can be tailored to ensure that your assets support the causes that are most important to you. If it’s your community as a whole that you wish to support, our Community Fund may be a great fit. If you would like to discuss how the causes that are most important to you can benefit from your generosity, please contact us so that we can tell you about the many possibilities.

  5. Create a legacy that will exist forever and give back to your community in the future

    • Some donors wish to create a legacy for themselves, their families, or someone else who was important to them.

    • We can establish Legacy Funds that are linked to an existing cause that you may wish to support. We can also create an entirely new fund.

    • We encourage Legacy Donors to communicate with us as soon as possible, so that we can discuss how you wish your Legacy Fund to operate in perpetuity. We can work through the details today so that when the time comes to accept your gift there is no question on how to proceed.
